Magnificent sunsets, fragrant flowers, picture-perfect beaches, clear blue waters, majestic mountains, lush valleys and rain forests—say the word “Hawai’i” and a setting made for romance comes to mind. Beautiful, exciting and exotic, the Aloha State beckons to lovers. No wonder it ranks among the top destinations in the world for weddings and honeymoons!

In Hawai’i, you can plan a traditional church service—or a ceremony that’s as unique as you and your betrothed. Charter a helicopter and exchange vows in a remote valley, before a cascading waterfall. Tie the knot barefooted on the beach, as rolling Pacific waves provide background music. Put on jeans and palaka shirts, mount horses and say “I do” in a verdant pasture surrounded by palm trees and tropical flowers. Board a sailboat and walk along the deck as sunset paints a stunning backdrop of orange, pink and purple. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination and budget.

There are wedding planners on all islands who can help you make the arrangements for your special day, right down to designing the invitations, creating the table centerpieces and buying a gown. Numerous packages are available, ranging from basic ceremonies to elaborate ones that include fresh flower leis and bouton-nieres, live entertainment, the services of a professional videographer, and such unique gifts and accessories as custom-made cake toppers and ring pillows, personalized toasting glasses and etched glass wedding certificates.

After the ceremony, you and your beloved can slip away on your dream honeymoon. Most resorts offer packages for newlyweds that include special amenities, services and activities in addition to lovely accommodations. How does a complimentary bottle of chilled champagne sound? Or a massage for two in a state-of-the-art spa? Wouldn’t you love to set your towels on a secluded stretch of sand and soak up some sun without another soul around? It’s all possible when you honeymoon in Hawai’i. There’s no better place to begin a lifetime of happiness together.

Marriage license requirements

You need a valid license to be married in Hawaii. Licenses may be obtained at the State Department of Health, Marriage License Office, 1250 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813, or by appearing before a marriage licensing agent on the Neighbor Islands (your hotel or wedding coordinator can direct you to the nearest one). Both the bride and groom must be present to obtain the license, which is valid statewide for thirty days. There is no waiting period, and the fee is $25, payable in cash.

Both partners must be eighteen years or older to be married without the consent of their parents. Those eighteen years and under must show a certified copy of their birth certificate as proof of age at the licensing appointment. In addition, those under eighteen must show notarized written consent of both parents.

For all others, a driver’s license, state I.D. card, passport, military I.D. card or other form of identification with a current photo is sufficient. If either partner has been married before, he or she will have to state the date, county and state (or country) in which the most recent divorce was finalized. The license also requires the names of each partner’s parents and where they were born. Brides do not have to undergo premarital screening for rubella.

A free “Getting Married” pamphlet is available by writing to the Marriage License Office, or by calling (808) 586-4544 between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. The Marriage License Office is closed on holidays.
